I come from a working class background, a secondary modern education and then the privilege of a scholarship to the Nottingham College of Arts and Crafts. The work there was drawing based for two years. I do fervently believe that drawing is not just about acquiring a skill but a way of looking and thinking, which is vital to an artist.
After a spell defending the realm I came back to finish my college education as a graphic designer. I then became staff designer to a packaging firm, a steep learning curve both in art and life.
I spent the next decade in advertising agencies, ending up as head of studio and art director. I eventually set up as a self-employed design consultant and calligrapher. During this time, I did some teaching and developed my interest in painting. .
I paint mostly in acrylic, watercolour and pastel. I am kept quite busy with commissioned work and am particularly keen to promote the delights of pastel painting, one of the oldest methods of producing images.
I have been privileged to be able to earn my living as an artist for most of my life and still produce some graphic and calligraphic work and tutor a number of art groups. I play bowls to an incredibly average level also ditto sing and play guitar and accordion. I am hoping to pursue my painting career into my dotage along with all the friends I have made on the way.
